NUTREM® Biological Nutrient Removal – Questions & Answers

Robert White

Our NUTREM solution is leading the way in Phosphorus and Nutrient removal. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers…
Q. What is NUTREM®?
NUTREM® is a BIOLOGICAL NUTRIENT REMOVAL SYSTEM (BNR) that treats wastewater to an exceptionally high standard, producing a final effluent that has industry leading Phosphorus and Nitrogen levels. We do not use any chemicals.
Q. How does NUTREM® work?
It’s a unique, compact and efficient SBR process using bacteria and other microbes to consume or absorb harmful nutrients in sewage. The process has been carefully developed and refined over years of research to create the optimal results using a Balance Tank Fermenter & Reactors, aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
Q. What results have you achieved?
We have 12 month data sets from a 3rd party independent laboratory analysis of our final effluent (results available upon request) that shows we are reducing P and N to Technically Achievable Levels:
- Total Phosphorus (TP) – 0.25mg/l (0.1mg/l achievable with tertiary filtration)
- Total Nitrogen (TN) – <5mg/l
Q. What are the advantages of NUTREM®?
● no dosing requirements – WE ARE PROUD TO BE CHEMICAL FREE
● effective in all seasons (i.e. including weak sewage strengths)
● lower capital expenditure than traditional treatment solutions
● lower operating costs than traditional treatment solutions
● smaller footprint, with resulting cost saving
● modular and scalable, allowing cost to be spread
● high quality effluent suitable for non-potable re-use (non drinking water use such as irrigation)
● virtually odour free process
● no corrosive by-products
Q. What does a NUTREM® look like?
Tanks can be fully or partially above ground or even fully buried.
Tanks / equipment can be housed in buildings or screening used for areas where it is important not to spoil the scenery.

Q. Does NUTREM® smell?
NO! We had independent testing conducted to show that the process is virtually odour free (results available upon request).
Q. How noisy is NUTREM®?
The components parts of the process – pumps, hyperboloid mixers etc are relatively quiet, however we can house the plant / equipment in buildings to further reduce the acoustic impact.
Q. Can I see a NUTREM® in action?
YES! We welcome visits from interested parties to see our flagship demonstration plant located on a Southern Water site in Hampshire, which has been in continuous operation for 10+ years.
Q. Why is NUTREM® better?
• Chemical free & environmentally friendly
• Typically lower Totex costs over 20 years
• Low maintenance
• Technically Achievable Limit of P & N removal

The Ideal Solution
With NUTREM®, water companies, commerce and developers get industry-leading nutrient removal in an environmentally sustainable way, at the same time as offering a number of cost benefits. NUTREM® has an innovative modular construction, requires a smaller footprint than other options, consumes less energy than more traditional BNR systems, with lower capital expenditure and lower operating costs.
All this makes NUTREM® ideal for new waste and sewerage developments, expansion of existing plants, new housing schemes, garden villages and a range of larger developments.
The key advantages of the NUTREM® process over alternative solutions are:
Industry-leading level of Total Phosphorus (TP) removal (below 0.25 mg/l)
Industry-leading level of Total Nitrogen (TN) removal (below 5 mg/l)
Ability to meet 0.1mg/l TP with the addition of tertiary filters
