The case focuses on severe pollution in the River Wye, which has worsened over several years and caused significant environmental damage. The main issue is nutrient pollution, particularly phosphorus, which leads to algal blooms that reduce oxygen levels in the water and harm wildlife. This has had wider impacts on the river’s ecosystem, as well as on local communities and businesses that depend on it.
One of the sources of pollution is linked to large-scale chicken farming. Poultry farming produces large quantities of manure, which is often spread on farmland as fertiliser. When rainfall occurs, nutrients from this waste can run off into nearby waterways.
The second source involves the incumbent water company, including sewage discharges and the spreading of treated sludge, both of which can also contribute to nutrient build-up in the river.
Thousands of residents and businesses are now bringing a High Court case against these companies. The case seeks compensation and action to restore the river, with the court being asked to determine accountability.
